So you’ve just got your first dental implant. Congratulations! Dental implants are as close as you can get to natural teeth. They’re dependable, functional, and attractive. If you take care of your dental implant, it should last for a long time. Caring for an implant is similar to caring for natural teeth, with just a few key differences. Here’s what you need to know about caring for your new dental implant.
1. Avoid Abrasive Kinds of Toothpaste
Abrasive toothpaste, like toothpaste that contain fluoride, can scratch your implant. Avoid any toothpaste specifically designed to remove stains and toothpaste specifically designed for people who smoke.
2. Floss Daily
Flossing daily is important no matter who you are, but it’s especially important if you have an implant. If you don’t floss already, start flossing now! If you’re out of the habit of flossing, you may need special instruction from your dentist. Talk to your dental professional about your flossing technique, and take your dentist’s suggestions seriously.
3. Never Use Your Teeth Like Scissors
Some people use their teeth to cut open packages, chew through strings and perform other tasks meant more for scissors. This is bad for all teeth, natural teeth included, but it’s especially bad for your dental implants. Never use your implants like scissors!
4. Use a Soft Nylon Brush
Toothbrushes come in hard, medium, soft, and extra soft varieties. If you’re not already using a soft or extra-soft nylon toothbrush, switch. If your dentist feels like you need a medium toothbrush for your natural teeth, pick up a soft nylon brush for cleaning the part of your mouth where your implant is located.
5. Visit the Dentist Regularly
Now that you have an implant, taking care of your teeth is more important than ever. After all, you don’t want to have to replace your implant! Make regular appointments with the dentist to get your teeth cleaned and examined. Follow all dentist recommendations and adjust your oral hygiene habits as needed.
